Messiaen was 31 years old when France entered World War II. He was
captured by the German Army in June 1940 and imprisioned in what is
now Zgorzelec, Poland. He had begun writing parts of the music before he
was captured but finished it while in prison. A sympathetic guard gave
him paper and a small pencil. The piece was premiered at the camp on
January 15, 1941 in front of 400 prisoners and guards. Messiaen claimed
that about 5,000 people attended the performance which included
clarinet, violin, cello and a piano. from Wikipedia
